Over the years I've changed my email and usenet posting signature quite a few times. Generally I've included a 'tagline' at the end which was some interesting or amusing quote. Just something that was 'me' at the time. Back in FidoNet days, these were song lyrics which were cycled through automatically as I posted things - I wrote my own mail-reader software back then so such things were trivial. Once I went to university the taglines were fixed for periods of days or even weeks as I changed my mood. Eventually I changed my taglines for a 'standard disclaimer' style, mainly so that nobody could be under any misconception about the intention of the posting, and the humorous taglines were gone. However, such disclaimers weren't suitable for public postings (only for email) so I had to cut them off manually. As I did so I tried to replace them with a comment thought up on the spot - either something I'd seen, something from the TV, something that was playing at the time, or just a random comment. The comment was almost never related to the posting itself.
These two groups of taglines - the fixed ones and the ones selected on the spur of the moment have been recorded for posterity in my local email boxes ('cos I keep everything - I don't like to lose parts of my life by accident, even though it does happen). Extracting them and sticking them here has been interesting, and amusing in itself. The latter set include links to the specific postings they were used on, using Google's groups service.
You might notice spelling mistakes in the taglines. They're automatically processed from the archives, so that's just the way they went out. Oops.
I have tried to annotate the taglines with their source. So if you saw a usenet posting where the tagline made no sense, you should be able to find out something about its derivation here. These annotations were made 25th June 2005 and are from memory. It's likely that some are wrong. These prefixed by what sort of derivation they have which should be obvious when you read them. In particular 'Lyric' means that it's a quote from a track. 'Unknown' means that I don't know or have some doubt about the derivation and therefore do not wish to claim it as my own when it's possible that it might be a quote from someone else. 'Original' means that I came up with it myself.
Note that the URLs, email addresses and telephone numbers included in the fixed set of tag lines may no longer exist.
